07700900461 – Did you call The Doctor?

This past weekend saw the penultimate episode of the Dr Who series which drew in an audience of about 9.8 million viewers in the UK (how do they know I was one of those viewers???). On the show a mobile phone number was displayed several time as 07700900461 which was the Doctors number through out the episode.

I can’t say that when viewing a show and seeing a number that I have ever been inclined to call it. The same went with this Dr Who show too… It just didn’t cross my mind to call that number, but yet around 2500 people tried calling the fake number to see if they could find out information on the future of Dr Who.

“They showed that number so many times, as if they were asking for it to be called.”

“Grrr – I phoned the Doctor’s phone number but there was just an annoying network message.”

“What’s the point in showing a phone number if you’re not gonna use it?!”

Ofcom who regulate phones say that the number is one of many supplied to program creators for use in shows. The numbers are not real and never will be real. People calling will not get charged for calling these numbers.

It makes you wonder why people would seriously think that the number would have anybody on the end. Did they really expect to speak to the Doctor (David Tennant)?

  1. I saw it but never called since I am located in the U.S. However, I did use the number when I got a phishing email from cardiff, wales. I put my name down as Capt. Jack Hartness of Torchwood Cardiff, Wales. and the number to call the Doctor as my contact info. If they think I am stupid enough to give my real info they deserve a stupid answer.

LOL! Well I had a good laugh doing it.

I’ll be honest, I did indeed call the number, not knowing what to expect, but as a diehard fan of Dr,who all the way back to Pertwee I was compelled to at least try it.
no risk no Glory. to all the fellow Dr. fans, Greetings from a simple Human. stay cool all.

I must admit, it had me wondering for a while. Of course I called the number. I thought it might be a promotional gimmick. No such luck. I did discover however, that if you visit http://www.07700900461.mobi you are taken to the official BBC Doctor Who website! Cool!

i saw the number on the stolen earth and put in my phone contacts for fun then i typed the number on the net and it brought me here with other fans that is so very doctor like people talking to each other

  9. PrincessPan says:

It really is a shame they didn’t set up some sort of message service for the phone number at lest. It would have been a nice treat for the fans and I’m surprised that with the growing popularity of Alternate Reality Games (ARG) that they didn’t even think about it.

  10. Darren from the US says:

I tried to call it the day after the episode premiered and it rang exactly 16 and a half times, then I got four beeps, and the call ended. The four was creepy because of the Master’s Archangel Network….now when I call, it just has a service message.

  11. elissa says:

i called lol, i didn’t expect it to work because it has too many #’s but i do still have it saved in my phone. just for the fans they really should put in a fake voicemail like “hi, you reached the doctor …” etc etc

  12. FeliciaFailure says:

I didn’t call because I’m from the US, but I thought it would probably have a funny message from the cast. Like on Scrubs, when you called 1(916)CALL-TUR (as in, Call Turk without the “k”) you would get the answering machine or, for a while, if you were lucky, you could actually talk to someone from the cast. :] It’s too bad they didn’t do that here, though.

He’s called the Doctor… Not ‘Dr Who’. I wish people would get it right! D:
