Apple comments on iOS 6 Maps problem

iOS 6 was released a couple of days ago to the public and within the first day or so, many users have reported problems with the maps due to problems when them being incorrect in many cases. Part of the reason for the backlash was that the maps cut out street view which the previous Google version had from iOS 5 and earlier. But, that isn’t the only problem. Users have also complained that there are many errors to be found such as towns missing, towns labelled wrong as well as an airport marked on a farm in Ireland.

Apple has now responded to clarify where it stands. The comment first says how brilliant iOS 6 is and then tags a bit on the end saying that they have a team of engineers working on it.

From AllThingsD:

“Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service,” said spokeswoman Trudy Miller. “We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.”

I can believe that Apple will have it fixed in time. It’s just a shame that they decided to roll it out without more testing. Having said that, I have used the beta version and hadn’t spotted any errors in my area and we can assume that with millions more users upgrading, it just accelerated the progress of finding fault. Either way, it is cloud based and therefore quickly fixable assuming the team are working on it as hard as suggested. Expect problems to be rectified over the next few weeks gradually. Remember that Google has been mapping the world for a number of years now and has far more experience with this.
