PS3 To Outsell Xbox 360

It might be a little hard to believe for die hard Xbox fans but according to EEDAR (Electronic Entertainment Design and Research) analyst Jesse Divnich’s predictions, by 2012 this may well be the case.

Arguments for and against each console seem to envelope many a gamer’s forum. Some differences between the two are slight where others are blindingly obvious such as Blu-Ray vs No Blu-Ray for example but nevertheless, it seems Microsoft and Sony both have reason to be happy for themselves as both have seen good growth in their own unit sales throughout this last year.

However, inspite of this, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 continues to sell many thousands more units than Sony’s PS3, though with a sketchy start due to Sony originally reporting losses on each console sold since release day this gap definitely now seems to be closing.

In an interview with Industry Gamers, Divnich has stated that…

“Worldwide, Sony will eventually take the lead from Microsoft, likely by the end of 2012… North America is a tougher challenge, and as we have seen lately, Microsoft’s lead is widening… I don’t know if the PS3 will ever overtake the Xbox 360 in North America. Maybe 2014? 2016? We do know the PS3 has incredible long-term value as a Blu-ray player, much like the PlayStation 2 did as a DVD player. But with strong competition coming from the digital front, one has to wonder if the PS3 will receive long retail legs like its predecessor did.”

What the running theme tends to be though throughout the battle between the two giants is that a games console is only as good as the games they run. Chart-topping exclusive games such as Halo: Reach and Uncharted 2 will always push the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 forward and if Microsoft and Sony are to see greater sales in the future then games developers will have to find new and exciting ways to promote interactivity between the player and the game.

Especially now that Move and Kinect have taken their corners, it’ll be interesting to see how well sales figures increase.
