Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime Made Official

Asus has officially announced the Eee Pad Transformer Prime. The new transforming tablet will be made available in the US in December with a price tag of $499. What you get for your money is a unique device that comes with a tablet and detachable keyboard. This allows you to use the device as just a tablet, or carry around a keyboard in a laptop form factor for typing whilst on the go.

When it launches it will ship running the Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system although this will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich shortly after launch… exactly when, we don’t know.

The Eee Transformer Prime runs the NVIDIA quad-core Tegra 3 processor which makes it extremely quick. It is also the first tablet device to ship with this particular processor. The Prime also has a GeForce GPU and a 5th companion core which is used for low power usage.

Other technical specs show that the screen is Super IPS+ and measures 10.1 inches. It is backlit by LED an is of course, a touchscreen. It is capable of showing 1280×800 pixels.

The RAM available in the Transformer Prime is 1GB and the device comes in two version which have either 32GB or 64GB of storage. This can be expanded by a microSD card. For connectivity it has 802.11b/g/n wireless and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.

A couple of cameras have been added to the device which includes an 8 megapixel sensor on the back and a 1.2 megapixel camera on the front. The camera on the back has an aperture of f/2.4 and also has a flash and auto-focus.

Expect this tablet to do well. It breaks away from the conventional tablet design that Apple made popular with the iPad and combines two form factors in to one unit… the laptop and tablet making it possible to use the device as just a tablet when needed. With it running Android it also has the benefit of instant on which is welcomed on devices these days.
