Canon Error 99 Firmware Update

canon-err99If you are the lucky owner of a Canon EOS 50D, but pestered from time to time by the Canon Error 99 message that pops up then Canon’s latest firmware update is for you.

What is the Canon Error 99?

The Canon Error 99 is a message that pops up when there is a contact issue between a lens and the body of the camera. Also it represents a bad battery, defective storage card and anything else the software doesn’t seem to like. It’s basically a catch all error message a bit like the familiar windows BSOD.

Up till now the current procedure to get rid of the Canon Error 99 was to take the battery out and put it back in. Canon have now created firmware numbered 1.0.3 that aims to tackle the Err99 message.

Firmware 1.0.3 fixes Canon Error 99

1. Corrects a phenomenon in which an image becomes overexposed when C.Fn.II-3 Highlight tone priority is set to ‘1³ together with other camera settings. (This correction has already been incorporated in the Version 1.0.2 and later firmware.
2. Corrects a rare phenomenon in which ‘busy blinks on the camera’s display panel and the shutter cannot be released due to the timing of battery installation.
3. Corrects a rare phenomenon in which ‘Err 99³ appears on the camera’s display panel and LCD monitor and the shutter cannot be released due to the timing of pressing the shutter button.

i bought my Canon 1000D approx 3 days ago, and now it has started showing me the Err99. i searched on the net and tried every possible troubleshoot advised by the users… from battery reinsertion to formatting the memory card… and also cleaning the golden points of the lens and the body… nothing worked for my cam… battery reinsertion though works for a while, but as soon as i switch the camera off once, the next time i switch it on and try to clik, it again shows the same error message… as far as i know, it’s a firmware problem.
Though Canon says that its new firmware 1.0.3 has rectified this prob, and i have the same firmware, still it shows the error…
seriously don’t know what to do……

  4. As you already updated the firmware I think the best action would be to take the camera back and ask for a new one. If it’s only 3 days old then they have to replace it.

I have the same problem with my 5-week old 1000D.
I’ll try to find a firmware upgrade, but last time I checked there was none.
It sure looks like exactly the same symptoms. Battery removal (and recharge) only works for a few clicks.
Things I tested was another lens (with and without image-stabilizing and also a lens without any electronics), another card and another battery (original Canon)

I really consider returning it to the shop as the last option, because I’m affraid they will wait a few weeks to write the note “problem not encountered”.

  6. G Noorlander says

Well, my 1000d camera is back from Canon. It took them 2 weeks to update the firmware to version 1.03. Too bad I forgot to write down the original firmware-version before I returned it for repair, so I can’t verify there is a newer version. At least the camera seems to work fine now.

  7. I had the same problem with my canon 40D, (error99) and tried everything, all the tricks switched lenes turn camera on and off memory card in and out, cleaned contacts, all that BS. Nothing fixed it!!! Then I sent the body to the factory. (Camera is 8 months old) It was back in my hands in a week. Great job Canon!! The fix was, according to my invoice, replace shutter ass’y, adjusted exposure & cleaned C-mos, Update filmware. Checked all to factory specs. You can try all that crap but it’s like putting a band-aid on a broken arm!!!
It’s not the lens or the memory card or the battery!!! don’t waste your time!!!

  8. Gijs Noorlander says

And the same error reappeared, so they sent it back to Canon over a week ago now.
I’ve seen in the photo’s I took before the last repairs, they didn’t even install a new firmware-version, so indeed it wasn’t a real repair 🙁
When they didn’t change anything and just installed the 1.05 firmware (which doesn’t fix anything for the 1000D, just added support for some new flash-light), I’m gonna be sooooo mad.

One would expect better service from a brand like Canon…
I’m not sending it for “repairs” about every 1400 photos.

  9. Gijs Noorlander says

Well, yesterday my 1000D camera was back from the 2nd repair and within 10 shots, the error returned.
So it is back for repairs for the 3rd time and I’m really considering not accepting the camera back and just ask for a refund.
I just lost confidence in this model (brand maybe??)
I also mailed Canon, but no answers yet.

  10. I had this problem on my Canon Eos xti Rebel. Just took a fine emery nail board and lightly swiped the gold connectors inside the lens this morning. Fixed the problem immediately.

  11. Canos EOS 1000D – Error 99

Anybody found the way to heal this sickness yet?
Seems like I did a very bad choice, because I was abot to by Nikon D90 and I was convinced to by camera for a better support.

  14. Hello All,

I have the same problem. None of the above solutions worked for me. I tried many alternative selections and now found the problem. Although I do not have a permanent solution, I have a workaround for you. Err99 comes for many problems. The problem I have is the image numbering. When you switch on the camera and start taking photos the number starts from a fixed number instead of next number in the sequence. In my case it is 1392. When there is already a file name with this number on the card then the error comes again. All I have to do is, as soon as the camere is switched on go to Menu and select the option for file numbering and set ‘Auto rest’. This works for me and hope this workaround might help some of you as well

  15. hello

I have the same problem with my 1000D recently…tried removing the battery n re-inserting, emptying the memory card slot and also checked the lenses…after doing so, the camera will either on for a while with the error appearing after shooting a picture or it wouldn’t on at all.At the moment, the camera doesn’t want to switch on at all….is there any other ways the prob can be solve? is there also the probability that the lens is not suitable for the camera(canon 20-22mm wide range)?

  16. Hi Premnath , I got the same problem. I am tired to repeat this action “Auto reset” every time I turn on the camera, have you find the other solution?

    Hi Folks,
I have same issue – I have Canon Xs – Nothing fancy – I bought a power grip and two extra batteries (not Canon but made for Canon) – They work just fine till yesterday – all of a sudden – I am getting Err 99… So I took both the batteries out – replaced with new one – removed the battery grip – placed original canon battery – still didn’t work – I have not updated any Hardware/Firmware – I am not even sure how do I do that – Please provide me your suggestions/help on that.

    Thank you,
