Apple Patent Reveals New Camera System

A new patent application has been filed by Apple [AAPL] that shows a new camera system.

The new camera system uses a new camera flash that is optimised based on what the subject of the scene is. By using a flash redirector, imaging sensors that sense conditions and a touchscreen, it aims to capture better pictures.

The system might be used to direct more light to the dark parts of a photo to more evenly light the scene. If a dark spot is seen on the touchscreen, you could just tap to illuminate the dark portion. [Read more…]

Adobe Plenoptic Lens Keeps Photos Always in Focus

Adobe has created a new system for computational photography that uses a plenoptic lens to capture subjects. What makes this particular set up different is that it can capture a subject and then process the photograph afterwords to get the correct part of the picture in focus.

The image that is captured uses a bunch of tiny lenses to capture the image each focusing in a different part of the scene. The example in the image above shows a girl in front of some trees. The image can be processed to show either the girl in focus or the trees in focus or even anything else seen in the picture in focus.

The plenoptic lens sits in front of the sensor and is a collection of lenses. When light passes through it, the sensor picks up a bunch different perspectives of an image of which each are captured by the sensor in a single sweep. These fragments of the scene can then be put together through rendering to produce an image focused as you want it. [Read more…]

iOS 4.1 HDR Lands on iPhone 3GS and 3G – Unofficially

Last week we found information that indicated HDR photography in iOS 4.1 could be hacked on to the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The official iOS 4.1 update that also launched last week only allows the iPhone 4 to capture HDR pictures.

This of course, is no longer the case thanks to a few smart people who managed to enable the option on older iPhone models.

Redmond Pie has put together a guide for those who have managed to jailbreak their iOS 4.1 (3G or 3GS). The How To guide goes through several steps on how to enable the feature. The easier way will be through a Cydia app that is being prepped for launch, but until it comes you’ll need to use this longer method to enable the feature. [Read more…]
