Google TV Update Coming This Week

Google [GOOG] has announced that it will be rolling out a new update this week to bring more features to Google TV.

The first main feature is the user interface. Google has made it customisable and lets you put the content you want to see most on the home screen. All other shortcuts have been put in to an “all apps” menu which can also be easily accessed.

Search has received an update which now lets you look for content on the following “Live TV, Netflix, YouTube, HBO GO, and more”. If you don’t know what to look for, Google has now made it easier to find content through 80,000 movies and TV episodes. These also come in the form of recommendations depending on what you have viewed.

YouTube has also been updated and now works better on the TV. HD streams are easier to find and also the ability to create a channel by a search is now an option.

Google is also opening up Google TV to app developers and will port a number of apps over. The list at first wont be huge as a lot of apps require a touchscreen, GPS or the telephone features, but for those that don’t, these will be made available. Developers also can now create apps for the platform.

Sony Google TV units will get the new update first (this coming week) with Logitech following shortly after that.
