The first Google Android powered mobile phone should be arriving soon. The first phone to be released is the HTC G1 which is also known as the Dream. T-Mobile have the honour of providing service for users of this phone.
Rather then going over the t-mobile deal I’d rather talk about the phone specs and what it can do. A 3.2 inch 65k colour screen is to be found on the phone which runs at a resolution of 480×320 pixels. The screen is touch sensitive as can be expected. The phone features a QWERTY keyboard which is stowed away under the screen as pictured below.
The phone is quad band allowing it to work in most places in the world on GSM and EDGE networks. UMTS is also supported on dual-band. Other features you will find in there include GPS, Wi-Fi and an accelerometer which is the trend these days. The GPS is expected to use location based search while the wi-fi allows for high speed net access where there is a signal available. A slight disappointment is the 1.3 megapixel camera that is included which seems to take this phone back a few years. The phone also has bluetooth but unfortunately the BT only allows for mono support and not stereo which seems like another step back in the mobile area.
Powered by Google’s Android OS you can expect some interesting features to be pushed in there including a bunch of Google online applications like GMail which has push support. Maps will work very well on this phone and street view should be good to go too.
A really cool feature that is available in this phone is an embedded compas that syncs with the Maps software. When you rotate the phone around the StreetView maps will also rotate to give you a 360 degree view of the city.
With Android being open source it no doubt can be unlocked although t-mobile will be locking it to their network. It’s only a matter of time before this phone works on any network.
