iOS 4.1 HDR Lands on iPhone 3GS and 3G – Unofficially

Last week we found information that indicated HDR photography in iOS 4.1 could be hacked on to the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The official iOS 4.1 update that also launched last week only allows the iPhone 4 to capture HDR pictures.

This of course, is no longer the case thanks to a few smart people who managed to enable the option on older iPhone models.

Redmond Pie has put together a guide for those who have managed to jailbreak their iOS 4.1 (3G or 3GS). The How To guide goes through several steps on how to enable the feature. The easier way will be through a Cydia app that is being prepped for launch, but until it comes you’ll need to use this longer method to enable the feature.

Full requirements and steps can be found over here.

We haven’t tested this yet. We do have concerns though as the iPhone 4 has problems with capturing movement with HDR enabled. With the camera taking 3 pictures in quick succession to each other, you get a tiny bit of blur if your subject is moving. The 3GS and 3G iPhone camera is a little slower than the iPhone 4, so you might get a little more blur than usual. We haven’t actually tested this as mentioned above, but it’s something we’d want to test out should we go ahead with the instructions.

Let us know how it goes for you and if the quality is better overall.
