It Could be Time to Update from iOS 3.1.3 – App Store No Longer Works for You – Might be a Bug

Update: It appears that this was a bug and that 3.1.3 devices are now once again able to access the App Store direct on their iOS device.

iPhone and iPod touch users still running iOS 3.1.3 are now (as of the 16th December 2011) unable to directly download apps from the App Store. Instead, new updates and apps will need to be downloaded in iTunes and then synced to the iPhone or iPod.

Although it’s often a good idea to update to new versions of iOS, in some cases it doesn’t make sense. For iPhone 3G users the step from iOS 3.1.3 to iOS 4 was quite a drop in terms of performance. Although Apple [AAPL] managed to release later versions of iOS 4 which addressed performance issues, some prefer to just keep iOS 3.1.3 to keep their 3G running at a decent speed. Those users will now need to tether and sync with iTunes to get app updates.

What is a little confusing about the problem is that some are hinting that it’s just a bug that Apple needs to fix while others mention that Apple is likely to make an announcement about it. If it is a bug then a fix should be made soon. At the moment, there is no official word yet.
