Nintendo 3DS Made Official

After a few months of hearing small bits and pieces here and there about the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo has now made it official over at E3.

The Nintendo 3DS is a glasses-free 3D gaming system that brings an extra dimension in to gaming. The screen is capable of giving the pictures on screen a bit of depth to more immerse you in the action.

“The additional dimension of depth in 3D makes it easier for players to judge distances while giving developers a new tool to create games and experiences that play with both height and depth,” said Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who pioneered the fully rendered 3D video game world with Super Mario 64¢.

The technical specs show that the top screen on the 3DS measures 3.53 inches while the lower touch screen measures 3.02 inches. Three cameras are built in to the 3DS with one inner camera and two outer cameras. The two outer cameras can capture 3D images. Inputs include a gyro sensor and a slide pad that lets you have 360 degree analogue input.

The top display has an 800 x 240 resolution. The 800 pixels across are split with 400 for each eye when used in 3D. The lower screen has 320 x 240 pixels. The 3DS needs to be looked at head on when wanting the 3D effect. Having no glasses means that the 3DS needs to be right ahead or you loose the 3D effect. It’s one of those things that can outweigh the need to carry glasses around.

When launched the 3DS will get a 2GB game card. Other features include 802.11 WiFi (not sure if that includes Wireless N or not just yet).

New games that will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS include…
· Kid Icarus¢: Uprising, the long-awaited franchise follow-up to the NES¢ classic.
· Mario Kart¢, which shows off the potential of driving and tossing bananas in 3D.
· nintendogs¢ + cats, a new version of the best-selling nintendogs franchise that lets players interact even more with their virtual puppies and kittens!
